Die Geschichte von DJ Premier und Jay-Z begann vor über 20 Jahren. Preemo war mit zwei Beats auf Jigga’s Debütalbum „Reasonable Doubt“ (1996) vertreten. Weitere Platzierungen auf den nächsten drei Alben folgten, aber seit „Vol. 3… Life and Times of S. Carter“ (1999) herrscht diesbezüglich Funkstille zwischen den beiden.
Die Chemie zwischen ihnen ist eine ganz besondere, wenn man sich “D’Evils,” “Bring It On,” oder “A Million And One Questions / Rhyme No More” anhört. Viele wünschen sich eine derartige Zusammenarbeit zurück. Z.B. DJ und Produzent MICK aka Mick Boogie, der das Ganze mal in die eigenen Hände genommen hat.
Der Partner von DJ Jazzy Jeff hat ein traumhaftes Mashup Projekt mit Jay-Z’s Vocals und Premo-Beats zusammengeschnürt. Der Titel, „7:18“, ist der Area Code von Floral Park, New York City (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island). MICK über das Projekt: “This mixtape is a love letter to the hiphop we grew up listening to. This is for the people who grew up analyzing the b-side of every Gangstarr and Group Home single. This is for the people who listened to Jay’s “A Million And One Questions” a million and one times.”
Er gibt sogar eine Empfehlung über dein Surrounding ab: “This is music you should only listen to wearing Carhartt jackets and wheat Timbs. Do not listen to this album at a beach under a palm tree. This is music for a cold, grey day. Preferably enjoyed in a 1994 white Lexus. This is raw and uncut Brooklyn hiphop in it’s prime. A tribute to two of the best who ever did it, and in a way only we could bring it to you.”
